|What is Breast Pain/Mastalgia?|
Breast pain, or mastalgia, is one of the most common breast disorders experienced by women and is one of the most common reasons for women to seek professional opinions about her breasts. Mastalgia can be divided into three forms: cyclical, non-cyclical and extramammary causes of breast pain.
- Cyclical Mastalgia is related to menstrual cycles.
- Non-cyclical Mastalgia is a constant or intermittent form of breast pain not associated with the menstrual cycle.
- Extramammary breast pain presents as pain within the breast but is caused from a non-breast source such as the rib cage, heart, lungs, esophagus or even superior digestive disorders.
This is followed by a detailed clinical breast exam with radiographic evaluation.
